Number & Algebra
Sequences, exponents, logs, and the algebra that turns a prompt into an equation you can finish.
Practice this topicThis refresher is a map of the number and algebra skills you will reuse across IB Mathematics Applications & Interpretation SL. Start with the number systems you work in, then sequences, exponents and logarithms, and the rearrangements that turn a worded prompt into something solvable.
On Applications & Interpretation the same toolkit usually sits inside a model or a data story: state assumptions, compute, then say what the number means.
When a result looks messy, pause and ask whether an equivalent form (factorised, logarithmic, or in terms of a parameter) is actually the answer the question asked for. That check saves more marks than rushing the last line.
What you should be able to do
- Rewrite index and log expressions so an equation becomes solvable.
- Recognise arithmetic and geometric sequences and find a required term or sum.
- Solve linear, quadratic, and simple simultaneous systems without losing solutions.
- Use binomial expansions at the depth this course expects.
- Judge whether an algebraic result is reasonable in the given context.
