IB Mathematics Analysis & Approaches HL Bootcamps

Workshop agendas you can run as a class or self-paced block, with a public lesson linked on each session that has a video.

Resources for IB Mathematics Analysis & Approaches HL

Exam technique intensive

A 3-hour plan: command terms, method lines on a public lesson, then a timed slice of the iStudyPlus Paper 1 set.

Half-day workshop for Analysis and Approaches HL. The aim is how answers are read. Topic teaching stays in the rescue workshop.

Session video. Eddie Woo — Chain Rule (2 of 3: Combining derivatives). Free public lesson (Eddie Woo / YouTube). This is not a recording of an iStudyPlus class, and it is not an IB paper solution.

iStudyPlus has not published its own recording of this intensive. Use this lesson as the worked script you will mark for communication.

Agenda (3 hours)

  1. 0:00–0:20 — Command terms. On paper, write one AA HL example of each of: show that, hence, sketch, find, and explain. Keep them. You will check your Paper 1 answers against this list later.
  2. 0:20–1:05 — Method lines. Watch the chain-rule lesson. Pause after each board line and mark it as if it were a script: label the substitution, write the reason for the chain, and box the final derivative. Do not copy the board in silence.
  3. 1:05–1:20 — Break.
  4. 1:20–2:10 — Timed slice. From the Paper 1 style set on the Practice Exams page, sit questions 3 and 4 only (18 marks, 25 minutes). Calculator away. Then spend 25 minutes marking communication only, using the mark scheme: could a stranger see the $R$ method, the stationary points, and the tangent equation?
  5. 2:10–3:00 — Personal rules. Leave with three written rules. Examples that count: “name the substitution before differentiating”, “box the exact form before rounding”, “a hence part must quote the previous result”.

No slide deck is uploaded with this resource. The agenda plus the linked lesson is the session.

Calculus rescue workshop

A 2-hour calculus clinic: a public lesson, then the iStudyPlus skills check under light time.

Use this when derivatives, areas, or “what the rate means” are the marks falling off Analysis and Approaches HL papers. The target topic is calculus. Do not add a second topic in the same hour.

Session video. 3Blue1Brown — The essence of calculus. Free public lesson (3Blue1Brown / YouTube) on why a derivative and an integral undo each other. Not an iStudyPlus class recording and not an IB markscheme video.

Watch it before the rebuild block, or play the first 12 minutes at the start of the workshop and finish the rest as homework.

Agenda (2 hours)

  1. 0:00–0:15 — Diagnose. Attempt skills-check questions 1, 3, and 4 with no notes. Tag each as blank, method only, or finished.
  2. 0:15–0:40 — Rebuild from the video. Write in your own words: a derivative is a rate, a definite integral accumulates. Then redo question 1 (chain rule) on a clean page and question 4 (normal line) as far as the gradient $-frac{1}{2}$.
  3. 0:40–0:50 — Break.
  4. 0:50–1:25 — Guided paper question. Paper 1 style set, question 4, parts (a) to (c). Write first, then uncover the mark scheme one part at a time. Part (d) is homework if the hour is tight.
  5. 1:25–2:00 — Exit check. Paper 2 style set, question 1, parts (a), (d), and (e) only: an initial value, a limit, and a rate with units. 15 minutes. Mark it. The follow-up is any calculus row in the after-paper review sheet.

Functions and transformations clinic

A 90-minute clinic on shifts, inverses, and domains, with a Khan Academy lesson and two original questions.

Self-paced or classroom clinic. Graph transformations first, then an inverse with a restricted domain. Both show up across AA HL papers.

Session video. Khan Academy — Shifting functions introduction. Free public lesson (Khan Academy / YouTube) on horizontal and vertical shifts. Not an iStudyPlus recording.

Agenda (90 minutes)

  1. 0:00–0:20 — Watch and restate. After the lesson, write the rules for $f(x)+k$, $f(x-h)$, and $-f(x)$ without looking. One sentence each, plus one point mapped by hand.
  2. 0:20–0:45 — Original drill. The graph of $y = f(x)$ passes through $(2,5)$. Write the image of this point on $y = 2f(x-3)+1$, and say which transformation happened inside $x$. Then sketch $y = ln(x)$ and $y = ln(x-2)$ on the same axes and state both domains.
  3. 0:45–0:55 — Break.
  4. 0:55–1:30 — Inverse. Sit Paper 1 style set, question 2 (the logarithm and its inverse). Mark it from that scheme. The usual leak is a domain of $x gt 2$ copied onto the inverse, which is wrong: the inverse domain is all real numbers.

Answers for the original drill

Inside the function, $x-3$ shifts the graph 3 units right, so the $x$-coordinate 2 becomes 5. The factor 2 and the $+1$ are outside: $y$ goes from 5 to $2times 5 + 1 = 11$. Image: $(5, 11)$.

$y = ln(x)$ has domain $x gt 0$. $y = ln(x-2)$ is that graph shifted 2 units right, domain $x gt 2$. Vertical asymptotes $x = 0$ and $x = 2$ respectively.
